How To Write Your Vows

Not sure where to begin or what to write for your vows? Use these steps as inspiration to help you get started.

Share a story or a favorite memory

This is a great place to start with writing your vows. Go back and remind yourself how and where the two of you met, how you felt when you saw each other, and more. It’s easy to get to writing once you remember all those great feelings you had when you first met. If your story was kind of clumsy and silly, you can share that as well! Guests love hearing vows that incorporate how you met, which can sometimes be an entertaining story to tell.

Think of your favorite song or song lyric that you both share and/or love

Music is a great connector and I’ve found more than not that most couples have a song or lyrics from a song that they share or connected with. Use that as your inspiration to begin writing out your vows. If appropriate, you can also use this song as your First Dance song or the background song for your slideshow if you’re having one. Killing two birds with one stone!

Ask yourself how you knew your fiance was “The One”

When was that moment you knew that your partner was the one you wanted to be with forever? Did it occur when you both were on vacation? Or were you running some errands together when you realized that he/she was the one you couldn’t live without? Describe that moment as you begin writing and you’re sure to have some gold nuggets there to include in your vows.

Describe how you two fit like two peas in a pod

Most couples find success in their relationship because they fill each other’s gaps. Where one person may not be good at planning, the other loves to plan fun weekends/trips/getaways. One might not be good with finances and spending, but the other has spreadsheets for miles and miles and loves to stay organized and spend within their limits. Touch on these in your vows and how your partner “completes you”, so to speak.

Most importantly, make sure your vows come from the heart! If it’s forced, it won’t come out as great as when it flows naturally. Guests want to see the real you beneath all the wedding garb. So be as true to yourself as much as possible in your vows - this is the key!
